Ideas for New Year’s Resolutions

Below is a list of ideas for New Year’s resolutions varying from big and small changes. Change is never easy to implement and resolutions may not always feel fun. However, practical and attitude-oriented changes can make a big difference when starting a new year. This list focuses on specific tasks you can accomplish in 2021. Additionally, we hope it’ll spark some ideas on good resolutions to consider for the year.

New Year’s Resolution 1

Inventory your medications. It is easy to get into a routine and miss slight alterations in prescriptions. The new year is a good time to stop and review medications. Ask your pharmacist to email you the medications and dosages you have. Then, send the information to a friend or family member and save it to your phone. Medication dispensers are another great way to ensure you’re taking the correct dosage, especially if you or your partner have any cognition challenges.

New Year’s Resolution 2:

Challenge yourself mentally and physically. Mental challenges such as crosswords, puzzles, and sudoku improve memory and mental dexterity. Physical challenges improve flexibility, balance, and endurance that can directly impact overall health. It is important to discuss physical activity with your doctor to see what is right for you and create a plan for future goals.

New Year’s Resolution 3:

Review your legal documents. This New Year’s resolution can be seen as more for your loved one than yourself. Take time to meet with a lawyer to ensure your will, living will, and advanced directives are legal, current, and truly reflect your personal desires.

New Year’s Resolution 4:

Check if you are up to date on your vaccinations. This year more than ever health has been a highlight. One way to reduce illness is to get your vaccines to include shingles, pneumonia and flu vaccines. Check with your doctor to see what you have missed and what they recommend.

New Year’s Resolution 5:

Understand your fall risk. Falls are one of the leading causes of injury for Americans over the age of 65. No matter your level of fitness, being proactive in identifying risk either in your own health from medications or from the environment such as rugs and stairs is vital in avoiding future emergencies. Talking to your doctor about your fall risk, having a risk assessment completed in the home, and considering a wearable medical alert device are all ways to reduce falls.

New Year’s Resolution 6:

Embrace technology. Technology can feel daunting due to the consistent changes and updates they include. Despite the changes, technology can be a gateway into a better quality of life. Video calls with family and friends, social media to increase connection, games, ebooks and online communities are just a few ways that technology can add to life.
