Fortunately though, there are many options older adults can use in their homes to battle against high temperatures and to stay comfortable. Below are some of our favorite tips and tricks to stay cool when the sun is sizzling!

1. Drink Water

Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink plenty of water; it’s important to stay hydrated throughout the day. Consider keeping a water bottle with you at all times to help ensure you have easy access to water throughout the day. If you want some variety, try infusing it with fruits or herbs to add some extra flavor!

2. Cold Washcloths

Use a cold washcloth on your neck or face to help cool down. If you want it even colder, run it underwater and then place it in the freezer for a little while. This will bring down your body temperature and help you cool off after a hot summer day.

3. Cool Showers

Take a quick shower, bath, or use a washcloth to cool down your body. Aim to keep the water just under your body temperature.

4. Know The Hottest Times of Day

If going outside is unavoidable, it’s important to remember the hottest parts of the day, which usually start from noon on, so you can plan your days ahead. The sun starts rising and is at its highest around 3 p.m. daily, which means if you can find cover in some shade or stay cool at home, you’ll be able to stay safe and healthy.

5. Wear Light Clothes

During the summer, wear thinner clothes in lighter colors. Light layering will allow you to adjust your temperature throughout the day by adding or removing garments. Aim for breathable cotton and avoid thicker polyester fabrics as those are notorious for retaining heat.

6. Keep Your House Cool

Keeping your house cool during the hottest part of a summer day is crucial, especially if that’s where you spend most of your time.

Cooling Fans:

For more direct airflow, consider purchasing a fan. Amazon has fans available in a range of sizes and prices.

Replacing Air Filters:

In the summer months, you are likely using your air conditioner more which means more air, dirt, and pollutants go through the filter. These pollutants can make your air conditioners less efficient and require you to replace your filters more often. Usually, they should be replaced every three months, but it may be as often as every one to two months with heavy use.

These tips will help prevent you from overheating this summer. Make sure you are listening to your body and taking breaks or resting when needed. If you feel like you are starting to overheat, don’t push yourself! Take a step back to enjoy the AC and use these methods to help cool down.
