Water Aerobics

Water aerobics is an excellent form of low-impact exercise to consider all year-round. Physical activity is vital to keep as a part of your routine to help maintain or improve mobility, retain strength, and preserve your independence. Because of the usual aches and pains that can spring up without warning, finding a suitable form of exercise can be challenging. But remember, incorporating regular movement into your life will help keep you physically fit and mentally strong.

What is it?

Water aerobics is typically done in the shallow end of a pool and does not involve swimming. It is a series of exercises such as water walking, bicep curls, leg lifts, and kickboard movements to engage your muscles. The buoyancy of the water eases the strain on the body and makes these movements easier with a lot less pressure on your joints. This exercise is a great option if you have chronic pain, are recovering from an injury, or suffer from achy joints. Water aerobics also helps to work all of your muscles and can assist in muscle gain.

Benefits

Water aerobics increases balance which in turn leads to fewer falls and resulting injuries. Other benefits include:

  • Improved heart and lung function
  • Relief of joint pain
  • Arthritis relief
  • Improved circulatory function

Regular exercise also has mental health benefits such as improved mood, reduced stress, decreased depression, and increased social involvement.

Recommendations

Like most physical activities, make sure to listen to your body and respect your limits. Don’t overdo it. If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or overly tired, take a step back and rest. If you are nervous about jumping into water aerobics, speak with a professional for more information that you can find through your doctor or at your local gym or rec center. Many classes require kickboards and foam weights which are often available upon request. Simply ask the instructor.

Water aerobics is a great low-impact activity to help boost your physical strength, stamina, and flexibility. This hobby will help provide you with a new social outlet, including many mental and physical health benefits.
