Safe Travels

As the vaccination rollout continues, many people are looking to travel. People want to visit with loved ones, get out of the house and, attend public gatherings. These desires are universal, making it vital to understand the best ways to travel and gather safely. To keep you and those around you healthy, heed these recommendations on travel safety.

Weigh Your Risks

Those over the age of 65 or with underlying conditions such as high blood pressure, cancer, or diabetes are considered at-risk. If exposed to COVID-19, people in these groups experience severe complications. Weigh your risk factors when deciding to travel and get your vaccine if you haven’t already. Remember you are not fully vaccinated until two weeks after your final vaccination.

Restrictions

If you are planning to travel, understand the travel restrictions of your destination. These safety precautions may not be the same as your hometown and could potentially affect your travel plans. This is important if you are traveling within the United States and especially so if you plan to travel internationally. Doing your research ahead of time will help you understand if a trip is possible and what to expect upon arrival. Another consideration to remember is the policies of many senior living communities. Many facilities are strict about leaving the facility to ensure residents stay safe during this time.

Considerations While Traveling

If you are flying to your destination, remember to wear a mask at the airport and on the plane. Bringing items such as hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes can help you stay germ-free while on the go. Consider wiping down commonly touched surfaces like tray tables and seat rests, and remember to sanitize your hands often. When you make stops, wear your mask and use hand sanitizer as needed. Minimizing your interactions with others and avoiding crowded areas will help decrease your exposure levels and keep you safe through your travels.

Safe Gatherings

Even if you decide not to travel, there is likely a gathering you would like to attend. If you do not feel comfortable meeting in person, you can consider meeting virtually through Zoom or FaceTime. If you feel comfortable meeting in person, take the necessary precautions to stay safe at the event. Know if others at the event are vaccinated or high risk, examine the COVID-19 levels in the area and, ask how many people will be there. When you are at the event, consider bringing a mask, especially when indoors, try to stay a safe distance away from others, avoid commonly touched surfaces, and sanitize your hands frequently.

After a long year of being cooped up in our homes, it is understandable that many people are ready to venture out. If you feel this way, determine your personal risk, research COVID-19 practices in your desired location, ask questions about the events, and take the proper precautions when out and about or traveling. Stay safe and bon voyage!
